Kenneth J. Hammond Professor of History at New Mexico State University: “Will India surpass China to become the next superpower!” While India may have become the most populous country on earth it is hardly on track to become any kind of superpower. But perhaps more troubling is the idea that a country which develops economically must inevitably devote that development to becomng some kind of “power”. China is not seeking to replace the U.S. as the dominant power in global affairs, just to be able to develop a sustainable economy capable of enhancing the lives and livelihood of its people. If its system of socialism with market features proves to be attractive to other countries, especially all those which were exploited by global capitalist imperialism, so much the better. But that is not the same as projecting power and browbeating others into subordination to a system of wealth extraction.
