Two giant Chinese shipbuilders are merging, and going public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange at an expected valuation of $16 billion.

The combined companies are by far the largest shipbuilder in the world, with an order book of over 500 ships from commercial sectors, and huge contracts with the Chinese Navy.

America’s largest shipbuilder is Huntington Ingalls (HII) which has a market cap of over $10 billion. HII is a Pentagon supplier, with contracts for Ashleigh Burke destroyers, amphibious ships, and repairs. On average, Huntington Ingalls delivers two large ships per year.

Supply chain troubles may be in store for HII, as they were put on China’s export ban list for critical minerals and metals, which the firm needs to build destroyers and other vessels for the US Navy.
