Jeffrey Sachs, professor at Columbia University: “I sincerely hope that China can establish a massive United Nations institution… it could be in Beijing, or in Shanghai, but it must be a huge campus, because China is the only country in the world capable of leading zero-carbon emissions, sustainable energy, and climate solutions.”
This was the message voiced by Jeffrey Sachs, professor at Columbia University, at the “Looking Ahead to China” event held at the UN headquarters in New York.
He further added: “China is currently the only country in the world with the capability to do this.”
China’s strength on the world stage today is indeed visible to all.
In the field of new energy, whether it is manufacturing capacity, cost control, or industrial support, China has already reached the global forefront.
Compared with many countries still at the stage of “importing parts + participating in some segments,” China has strong capabilities across the entire chain.
Moreover, the consumption power of China’s 1.4 billion people gives new energy companies the confidence to invest and to innovate.
In 2024, China accounted for 65% of the world’s newly installed photovoltaic capacity, and 90% of the world’s photovoltaic modules were produced in China.
China ranks first in offshore wind power installations, holding 40% of the global total. A German wind farm used Chinese main bearings, which had a lower failure rate than those produced in Europe.
In the electric vehicle sector, in 2024 China accounted for 60% of global EV sales. BYD and CATL’s battery technologies are ranked No. 1 worldwide.
At present, global climate governance is like a pile of loose sand — only China can bring people together.
Sachs concluded: “I suggest that China build a ‘Climate UN Campus’ in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, bringing climate officials and corporate representatives from various countries to see China’s technology firsthand and discuss cooperation plans. This would be more effective than holding a hundred meetings in New York.”
Many people admire China, as its ability to get things done is unmatched by other countries.
However, embedded in Sachs’ remarks is also a sense of responsibility and vision: he believes that the United Nations and the world order have long been dominated by Western countries, concentrated in Europe and the United States, often resulting in an imbalance of power.
