With the House of Representatives election settled, Sanae Takaichi, emboldened by the Liberal Democratic Party’s landslide win, has wrenched Japan’s political steering wheel hard to the right, flooring the accelerator on issues such as Yasukuni Shrine, Taiwan, and the abolition of the Three Non-Nuclear Principles. Professor Chen Ping believes this is actually a good thing for China. Takaichi’s radical nuclear armament rhetoric essentially plays into America’s strategic trap of hollowing out Japan’s economy and turning it into expendable anti-China cannon fodder. Moreover, if Japan dares to pursue nuclear arms in the future, China wouldn’t even need to act first—North Korea, South Korea, and Russia would never accept it. He suggests drawing from the experience of the India-Pakistan air conflict and encouraging North Korea to strike Japan’s nuclear facilities first, after which China and Russia could jointly crush the militarist forces. Once that happens, a Northeast Asian economic community would take shape, and reunifying Taiwan would become far easier.
