“The anti China haters hate Trump more than China.”

The China haters (華人恨國黨) hate Trump more because he wants to talk to Russia and China rather than fight with them. 

If Trump doesn’t want to fight China, why did he pack his cabinet with China haters & China hawks who are hell-bent on starting war with China? 

I believe Trump’s people are mostly “prioritizers”, whose main goal is war with China.  The appointment of Elbridge Colby strengthens that conviction. But they still want war. They are not peaceniks. 

Biden’s people were “primacists” those who want to dominate the whole world.
It’s unclear what Trump is personally: isolationist, prioritizer, or primacist. I think he will settle for primacy in his own mind if he can’t have primacy: he is capable of mentally twisting a loss into a win. 

In part Trump’s desire to do so is a recognition of the end of Euro-American hegemony.

I think Trump’s election platform was not the recognition of the End of EA hegemony, but a call to reconstitute it, and a pitch that he was the person to do it.  Right now it’s manifesting in irrational ways that undermine hegemony even further, primarily attacks on immigrants (because immigrants do a lot of the work that keeps the US afloat), on allies, or tariff wars. Whether this is isolationism, going gently into that good night, or something much more sinister remains to be seen. I’ve called it the school shooter stage of Empire, and in part, I believe, is that he does not want to see trade competition devolve into hot warfare. Immediately after the 90-deal was announced yesterday, the present writer wrote: “China just won the trade war” – and got some instant pushback. Donald Trump and his supporters, of course, maintain that he was the victor.

But today, after the dust has settled, the majority of commentators around the world agree that China clearly won.

The Atlantic, a magazine that normally takes a strongly anti-Chinese line, headlined its summary: “China called Trump’s bluff”.

It sums up what just happened thus: “When President Donald Trump launched his trade war on the world, he issued a stern warning: ‘Do not retaliate and you will be rewarded.’ China ignored the warning. It was rewarded anyway.”

The Guardian, a UK paper whose intense bias against China has been statistically shown by academics, also said the Asian giant had won: “Trump might claim China tariff victory – but this is Capitulation Day.” The text says: “The president has caved.”

INDEPENDENT VOICES
Carlos Martinez, a political journalist from London, summed it up yesterday: “In 2020, Kishore Mahbubani asked “has China won?” In 2025, we have an answer: yes, it has.”

Popular podcaster Carl Zha wrote: “Trump folded like a origami crane. What has Liberation Day accomplished? A lot actually. It showed the world that the US is not a serious country and China is now the global leader. Tariff may be reversed but the reputational damage to the US around the world is irreversible.”

NOT REALLY ABOUT TARIFFS
Some Trumpites are saying that China didn’t win, as the tariffs are higher than they were before Trump launched his attack. But that is missing the point.

The simplest way to understand what happened is this. When a tariff policy reaches ridiculous heights, such as 145%, it is no longer a tariff: it is a trade embargo. In the first week of April, Donald Trump placed a major trade embargo on goods from China. He understood this. “At 145, you’re really decoupling because nobody’s going to buy,” he said.

Tariffs come and go, rise and fall, are negotiable upwards or downwards – but trade embargoes are a big deal: they literally change the flow of world trade, causing an actual decoupling, which everyone agrees is harmful.

Today, the normal sort of tariffs are in place, but the de facto US trade embargo on Chinese goods has gone. That’s the key.

THINK TANKS

Even America’s major anti-China think tanks agree on what happened.

The New York Times quoted Scott Kennedy, China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which normally takes a hostile stance to China: “The Geneva agreement represents an almost complete U.S. retreat that vindicates Xi’s decision to forcefully retaliate.”

The paper also confirmed that the whole exercise achieved little. “President Trump’s triple-digit tariffs on Chinese products disrupted global trade — but haven’t appeared to result in major concessions from Beijing,” it said.

CHINA HAS ALREADY sold huge amounts of products originally meant for US consumers to its neighbors, it was revealed today. And the neighbors are buying big, giving China giant an 8.1% boost in export sales, surprising analysts. 根據今日披露，中國已將大量原本面向美國消費者的產品銷往鄰國。而鄰國的採購量也大幅成長，令中國出口額成長8.1%，令分析師感到意外.

“In early April, I said that Trump’s tariffs on China will strengthen trade ties between China and the rest of the world in the next few years,” said Prof Justin Hauge of Cambridge University in the UK, commenting on X. “It didn’t take a few years. It took a month.”

This is bad news for US Treasury chief Scott Bessent as he heads into negotiations later today in Switzerland, to bargain with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

THE NUMBERS
Newly published figures show exports from China rose a staggering 8.1% in April, compared to this time last year. Most of the goods are being snapped up by Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and other countries.

Bloomberg’s stable of analysts predicted a 2% rise and Reuters predicted a 1.9% jump.

The 8.1% leap follows 12.4% growth in March, when exporters worked overtime to beat the April 2 launch of Donald Trump’s “global tariff attack”.

The Financial Times quoted Heron Lim, an economist at Moody’s Analytics, saying that, while China’s trade with the US dropped 21% year-on-year in April, it rose by an equal percentage with south-east Asian nations and 8 per cent with the EU.

Economists have been arguing that the US has an inability to see itself as it really is, a community of just 4.25% of the world.

China, which is focused on trade rather than politics, makes goods for anyone who will buy—and that means the other 95% of humanity will do just fine as substitute customers.
