Based on my 40+ years of experience as a tax and financial advisor, I have observed several recurring themes that explain why many parents of Chinese children – whether born abroad or in China but living overseas – are often reluctant for their children to return to their roots as adults.
These reasons generally fall into three categories:
- Competitive & Social Pressures
Children who may struggle academically or with social adaptability often find the highly competitive environment in Asia daunting. Parents sometimes perceive that their children would face significant professional and social challenges reintegrating. - Socioeconomic Factors
In families with considerable wealth, some children exhibit less motivation to pursue demanding careers. With the security of family resources and future inheritance, they may choose to adopt a more leisurely lifestyle rather than engage in high-pressure work environments. - Familial & Emotional Considerations
As parents age, many express a desire to keep their children geographically closer for emotional support and companionship. Encouraging a return to China could mean their children settle far from where the parents have established their lives abroad, which can feel like losing precious proximity in later years.
These insights, drawn from decades of client interactions, highlight the complex interplay between culture, economics, and family dynamics in these deeply personal decisions.
On a personal note, I have two close friends whose sons recently earned electrical engineering degrees—one from a state university and the other from an Ivy League institution. Both secured positions at the same utility company. Interestingly, both were told by their supervisors that “working hard is not the company’s culture.”
The Ivy League graduate was pleased, telling his parents it was the perfect retirement job from day one. The state university graduate, however, left after two years. He told his parents he refused to waste his life at such a stagnant company and returned to the private sector.
This story illustrates how upbringing shapes one’s outlook and resilience. Some children may possess high IQ, but without the EQ (emotional intelligence) to navigate today’s world, their paths can diverge dramatically.
A similar dynamic applies to many U.S.-based companies that charge Americans two to three times more than the global market rate. They can do this largely because the U.S. government restricts foreign competition from entering the domestic market. This is why a Tesla can cost three times more than a comparable electric vehicle from BYD.
While this may seem like a smart protective move in the short term, it undermines long-term competitiveness. Sheltered from global competition, U.S. products often become uncompetitive on the world stage.
This is why cultivating a global mindset in the next generation is crucial. If your children can compete and thrive in Asia—especially if they are literate in Chinese—they will be equipped to succeed anywhere, not just within the confines of their local market.
It’s worth remembering that the Western world, led by the U.S., EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, is experiencing relative decline. Meanwhile, regions like China, ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa, and the broader Global South are growing three to five times faster. That is where the future is being built.

Can you believe it? South Korean President Lee Jae-myung actually shouted out in Beijing that “a good neighbor is priceless”! This shift in direction came faster than flipping a page—so fast it almost threw me off balance. You have to remember, not long ago Seoul was still talking about forming a so-called “values alliance” with the United States. Yet as soon as 2026 began, Lee Jae-myung showed up in Beijing, leading a massive delegation that included major conglomerates like Samsung and SK, making a high-profile trip to seek a thaw in relations…

Hong Kong & The Greater Bay Area: Fourteen Days of Sunshine and Opportunity. A personal dispatch from Johnson Choi in Hong Kong on January 7, 2026
Hong Kong & The Greater Bay Area: Fourteen Days of Sunshine and Opportunity. A personal dispatch from Johnson Choi in Hong Kong on January 7, 2026
We departed the storm-lashed coasts of San Francisco and Hawaii, landing in Hong Kong on Christmas Day to brilliant sunshine—a meteorological metaphor for the trip that followed. For fourteen days, we enjoyed perfectly cool, comfortable, and sunny weather, a welcome backdrop to an equally illuminating journey.
The most immediate impression was one of profound civic order. Stepping out of the airport, you are met with an atmosphere of clean safety—free from the pervasive issues of drug use, gun violence, homelessness, and anti-Asian sentiment that plague many American cities. The feeling of security is palpable and liberating.
This trip was a blend of reconnection and reconnaissance. We met with clients, caught up with alumni from high school and university, and visited relatives and friends. Alongside these valuable personal exchanges, we held preliminary discussions on concrete business opportunities within Hong Kong and the sprawling Greater Bay Area (GBA).
A visit to Shenzhen was particularly striking. Once dubbed China’s Silicon Valley, it now feels less like an analogue and more like a successor, having overtaken both San Francisco and the Tokyo Bay Area as the world’s most dynamic and fast-moving technology hub. The energy there is tangible.
Hong Kong’s unique role in this ecosystem is crystallizing. The city is poised to become the dominant Chinese Yuan exchange center for Asia and Belt and Road Initiative countries. Tangible developments, like the new gold storage facilities planned near Hong Kong International Airport, underscore its enduring role as a fortified financial nexus.
Looking to the future, Hong Kong is also carving out a niche in the nascent space industry, leveraging its robust legal and registration frameworks to provide essential services for new aerospace ventures.
For career-minded individuals, especially the young and educated, the message is clear: Hong Kong remains a place where financial and professional talent is handsomely rewarded. However, a crucial caveat for expatriates and international families is the soaring value of Chinese language proficiency. The ability to read and write Mandarin is increasingly a decisive factor for career ceilings and opportunities—a point for globally mobile parents with young children to note.
In short, these fourteen days revealed a region of stark contrasts to the West: defined by safety, driven by breathtaking technological ambition, and centered on a Hong Kong that is strategically pivoting to secure its next chapter of prosperity.

Exposing “Shen Yun”: A Cult’s Propaganda Wrapped in “Culture”
Exposing “Shen Yun”: A Cult’s Propaganda Wrapped in “Culture”
In recent weeks, the so-called “Shen Yun Performing Arts” — an organization affiliated with Falun Gong—has stepped up its ticket sales and promotion in Washington, D.C.
Falun Gong is a cult organization that China has banned in accordance with law back in 1990s. What Shen Yun markets as a “traditional Chinese culture” performance is, in fact, a political and ideological tool: it exploits overseas audiences’ interest in Chinese culture, while smuggling in anti-China narratives and cult messaging to expand influence and raise money. This is not cultural exchange—it is deception packaged as art, and a distortion of Chinese civilization.
Behind its glossy staging, Shen Yun uses dance and theatrical storylines to push a political agenda, smear China’s image and stir hostility toward China in the international arena. Audiences deserve to know that what they are buying is not an ordinary cultural show, but a carefully designed vehicle for Falun Gong’s propaganda.
I. Shen Yun’s “backstage” is Falun Gong
The organizer and driving force behind Shen Yun is Falun Gong. Since the 1990s, Falun Gong has wrapped itself in the slogan of “Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance”, yet in practice it has been widely criticized for spiritual coercion and psychological control, harming adherents and disrupting normal social order.Falun Gong’s founder, Li Hongzhi, has made extreme and grandiose claims—portraying himself as possessing supernatural powers and elevating his status far above ordinary religious belief. Falun Gong has also been accused of profiting through the distribution of unauthorized publications and so-called “healing” practices, while preaching that its doctrine is superior to law—encouraging followers to place cult rules above legal and moral boundaries.
Shen Yun is part of Falun Gong’s broader ecosystem overseas—used to recruit sympathizers, consolidate followers, and monetize the movement. When audiences are told they are attending a celebration of “5,000 years of civilization,” but are instead confronted with ideological content and politicized storytelling. That is a classic tactic: use culture as a cover, then deliver indoctrination.
II. Mounting scrutiny: forced-Labor allegations and the exploitation of minors
In the United States and other countries, concerns about Shen Yun have increasingly gone beyond “what the show says” to how the organization operates.Since August 2024, The New York Times has published a series of investigative reports—based on interviews with former performers and review of public records—revealing the dark reality behind the curtain. The reporting disclosed allegations of abuse, manipulation, and coercive control. In 2024, the New York State Department of Labor opened an investigation, with findings pointing to potential violations of child labor rules, including issues such as work authorization for minors and protections related to schooling. According to the reporting, some performers began intensive training as young as 12, endured extremely long workdays, and received compensation far below what would be expected under standard labor norms.
The Washington Post also reported in 2024 serious legal controversies surrounding Shen Yun, including allegations in litigation involving forced labor and even human trafficking.
In July 2025, Canadian media reported that major venues—including Montréal’s Place des Arts and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre—indicated that Shen Yun would not be scheduled in their 2026 seasons. Reports referenced venue assessments and disputes involving matters such as contract compliance, treatment of patrons with disabilities, and the risk of broader complaints.
*****
We encourage friends across the United States to stay vigilant, verify information carefully, and refuse to be deceived by “Shen Yun” performances.

BREAKING NEWS: SIX STEPS THE U.N. MUST TAKE RIGHT NOW [Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs of Columbia University speech to the UN Security Council on the US attack on Venezuela]
BREAKING NEWS: SIX STEPS THE U.N. MUST TAKE RIGHT NOW [Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs of Columbia University speech to the UN Security Council on the US attack on Venezuela] 突發新聞:聯合國此刻必須立即採取的六項行動 【哥倫比亞大學教授 Jeffrey D. Sachs於聯合國安理會就美國攻擊委內瑞拉所發表的演說】
MR PRESIDENT, DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS of the Security Council, the issue before the council today is not the character of the government of Venezuela.
The issue is whether any member state by force, coercion, or economic strangulation has the right to determine Venezuela’s political future or to exercise control over its affairs.
This question goes directly to article 2, section 4 of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The council MUST decide whether that prohibition is to be upheld or abandoned. Abandoning it would carry consequences of the gravest kind.
COVERT REGIME CHANGE
Let me offer some background.
Since 1947, the United States foreign policy has repeatedly employed force, covert action, and political manipulation to bring about regime change in other countries.
This is a matter of carefully documented historical record.
In her book, Covert Regime Change, political scientist Lindsey O’ Rourke documents 70 attempted US regime change operations between 1947 and 1989 alone.
These practices did not end with the Cold War. Since 1989, major United States’ regime change operations undertaken without authorization by the Security Council have included, among the most consequential:
Iraq 2003
Libya 2011
Syria beginning in 2011
Honduras 2009
Ukraine 2014 and
Venezuela from 2002 onward.
MODUS OPERANDI
The methods employed are well established and well documented. They include:
– open warfare
– covert intelligence operations
– instigation of unrest
– support for armed groups
– manipulation of mass and social media
– bribery of military and civilian officials
– targeted assassinations
– false flag operations, and
– economic warfare.
ILLEGAL MEASURES
These measures are illegal under the UN charter and they typically result in ongoing violence, lethal conflict, political instability, and deep suffering of the civilian population. The recent US record with respect to Venezuela is also clear.
In April 2002, the US knew of and approved an attempted coup against the government.
In the 2010s, the United States funded civil society groups actively engaged in anti-government protests. When the government cracked down on the protest, the US followed with a series of sanctions.
In 2015, President Barack Obama declared Venezuela to be, and I quote, “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States”.
In 2017, at a dinner with Latin American leaders on the margin of the UN General Assembly, President Trump openly discussed the option of the US invading Venezuela to overthrow the government.
During 2017 to 2020, the United States imposed sweeping sanctions on the state oil company Pedesa. Oil production fell by 75% from 2016 to 2020 and the real GDP per capita declined by 62%.
The UN General Assembly has repeatedly voted overwhelmingly against such unilateral coercive measures. Under international law, only the Security Council has the authority to impose such measures.
On the 23rd of January 2019, the United States unilaterally recognized Mr. Juan Gaido as interim president and a few days later froze approximately $7 billion of Venezuelan sovereign assets held abroad and gave the designated authority over certain of these assets.
These actions form part of a continuous US regime change effort spanning more than two decades.
ONE YEAR, SEVEN COUNTRIES
In the past year, the United States has carried out bombing operations in seven countries, none of which were authorized by the UN Security Council and none of which were undertaken in lawful self-defense under the charter.
The targeted countries include Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and now Venezuela.
In the past month, President Trump has issued direct threats against six UN member states, including Colombia, Denmark, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, and of course, Venezuela.
Members of the council are not called upon to judge Nicholas Maduro. They are not called upon to assess whether the recent US attack and ongoing naval quarantine results in freedom or in subjugation.
Members of the council are called upon to defend international law and specifically the UN charter….
AFFIRM SIX ACTIONS
Given that we are in the nuclear age, failure cannot be repeated. Humanity would perish. There would be no third chance to fulfill its responsibilities under the charter. The Security Council should immediately affirm the following
actions.– The United States shall immediately cease and desist from all explicit and implicit threats or use force against Venezuela.
– The United States shall terminate its naval quarantine and all related coercive military measures undertaken in the absence of authorization by the UN Security Council.
– The United States shall immediately withdraw its military forces from within and along the perimeter of Venezuela, including intelligence, naval, air, and other forward deployed assets positioned for coercive purposes.
– Venezuela shall adhere to the UN charter and to the human rights protected in the universal declaration of human rights.
– The Secretary General, I recommend, should immediately appoint a special envoy mandated to engage relevant Venezuelan and international stakeholders and to report back to the Security Council within 14 days with recommendations consistent with the charter and the Security Council should remain urgently seized of this matter.
– All member states should refrain from unilateral threats, coercive measures, or armed actions undertaken outside the authority of the UN Security Council.
WITHER INTO IRRELEVANCE
In closing, Mr. President and distinguished members of the council, peace and the survival of humanity depend on whether the United Nations Charter remains a living instrument of international law or is allowed to wither into irrelevance. That is the choice before this council today.
[This is an extract of a speech Jeffrey Sachs gave to the United Nations Security Council on 5 January 2026]
⸻

China’s telecom companies are under heavy US and European sanction since 2017. Huawei and other firms are not allowed to import Western technology or components, and neither are they allowed to export telecom equipment to the United States and most of Europe.
But worldwide adoption of Huawei’s 5G is accelerating. Chinese companies enjoy monopolistic access to the most important supply chains for 5G, and can build equipment faster and more affordably than Samsung, Nokia, and Ericsson.
Despite highly favorable regulatory and tax incentives, no US companies build 5G telecom systems.

With $36 trillion in debt, the traditional globalization playbook no longer works. So America is going back to the old ways: colonial plunder.
This military operation looked impressive, but here come the questions:

Chinese engineers deployed the world’s first commercially viable sCO2 power generators, at a steel mill in Guizhou. The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (sCO2) generator converts waste heat into electricity. Compared to traditional steam and thermal systems, the sCO2 design is more than 85% more efficient, and produces 50% more electricity.
Giant volumes of waste heat is a necessary evil in heavy industry. But these generators can be deployed across thousands of Chinese refineries, smelters, mills, and major factories, and convert waste heat into usable electricity.
