China and the west are driving in opposite directions on electric cars. 中國和西方在電動車上的發展方向截然相反。

Top German carmaker VW yesterday reported a 26% year-to-date rise in fully-electric car sales in China—offset by a fall in sales, also of 26%, of the same products in the United States. Sales in Europe also fell, by 14%.

The gap is widening, third quarter figures reveal. VW, maker of luxury brands Porsche and Audi, saw fully electric vehicle Q3 sales grow in China by 5.2% – compared to a 41 per cent Q3 drop in the US. This leaves the company global sales down 9.8% to 189,400 cars for Q3.

It’s unclear why the transition from fossil fuel cars to clean energy ones is so dramatically more successful in China than in the west, but likely involves a range of factors.

US-led export bans on high-end semiconductors were intended to slow China’s development of their own chip industry. These restrictions have clearly backfired, as Chinese companies are quickly innovating through chipmaking milestones much faster than anticipated.

The restrictions have also led companies to find creative work-arounds to access chips on the market. Western companies legally buy the fastest chips and install them on servers, which are then leased to Chinese firms to do cutting-edge work.

Other approaches involve simply setting up new corporate divisions in China, or relocating existing ones, to place operations beyond the reach of US regulators.

In an ironic twist, market prices for the fastest US-built semiconductors are lower in China than in the US, as fierce competition from Huawei is forcing aggressive price cuts by dealers and cloud servicers.

Where substances are not originally addictive, they are redesigned (usually refined) to become addictive: coca leaf–>cocaine; ritual cacao–>chocolate candy; cane sugar–>refined sugar; ritual tobacco leaf–>cigarettes; etc.

The States could simply pass legislation regarding SM–as has China–but they won’t. Because that would have to apply to all SM. It would require uniform standards across apps to protect children. So, they’d rather go selectively after a Chinese app for money.

Overuse itself is not the same as an addiction. Addiction causes demonstrable harm, which is why it requires banning or restriction. “Loss of focus” or “Loss of self-esteem” is a loose concept that they will have difficulty proving. But if they persist, they are attacking the pillars of capitalism itself.
