On the afternoon of December 23 local time, at the request of Venezuela and with the support of China, Russia, and other countries, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting. During the meeting, Sun Lei, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that the United States has continued to strengthen its military deployment in the Caribbean and around Venezuela, escalating sanctions, blockades, and threats of force, and even arrogantly laying claim to Venezuela’s territory and resources. Such actions by the United States blatantly trample on the sovereignty and security of other nations, seriously violate the UN Charter and international law, and pose a real threat to regional peace.

Sun Lei emphasized that China opposes all forms of unilateral bullying and supports nations in defending their sovereignty and national dignity. “We oppose any actions that violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and infringe upon the sovereignty and security of other countries. We oppose the use or threat of force in international relations. We oppose external forces interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs under any pretext. We oppose illegal unilateral sanctions and ‘long-arm jurisdiction’ that lack a basis in international law and are not authorized by the Security Council.”

This statement is a strong response from Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressing the recent U.S. interception of a Chinese oil tanker on the high seas during a press conference.

Who could have imagined that such brazen “maritime robbery” would take place in the Caribbean high seas at the end of 2025? In the early hours of December 20 local time, the “Century,” an oil tanker owned by a Hong Kong-based company and loaded with 1.8 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil destined for China, was surrounded by U.S. military helicopters and vessels. Armed soldiers descended onto the ship via ropes, seizing control directly.

On the same day, Trump publicly declared, “The oil and the ship belong to the United States,” stating that the oil would either be added to the strategic reserve or auctioned off. Behind these arrogant remarks lies a blatant disregard for international law without any justification. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea explicitly states that the high seas belong to all humanity, and the United States has no UN authorization for such actions, making this purely a case of unilateral bullying.

This is not an isolated incident. Within just ten days, the U.S. has seized ships twice. On December 10, 1.1 million barrels of crude oil from the “Skipper” were illegally seized. China-Venezuela energy cooperation is transparent and compliant. Over the past two decades, China has invested more than $113 billion in Venezuela, with 90% of Venezuela’s crude oil exports going to China.

The U.S. strategy reveals three underlying motives: First, to strangle Venezuela’s economic lifeline and force a change in its government. Second, to undermine China’s diversified energy supply. Third, to alleviate domestic inflation and appeal to voters by seizing low-priced crude oil. More insidiously, 60% of China-Venezuela trade is settled in yuan, directly challenging the dominance of the U.S. dollar.

The international community has long seen through these actions. Venezuela has condemned them as “acts of piracy,” while Russia and Brazil have publicly opposed the U.S. moves. UN experts have jointly issued statements criticizing the U.S. actions. The U.S. military’s 24-hour pursuit of the “Bella 1” tanker ended in failure, exposing the emptiness of its blockade.

We must not forget the “Galaxy Incident” over 30 years ago, when we had no choice but to endure humiliation. Today, China is no longer an easy target to be manipulated. With the normalization of long-range naval escorts, diversification of energy supply routes, and the acceleration of yuan settlement, China’s countermeasures are justified, forceful, and measured.

The high seas are not the private property of the United States, and international rules are not its tools. The hegemonic farce of seizing resources by force will ultimately collapse in the face of resistance from other nations and China’s countermeasures.

特朗普當天就高調放話“油和船都歸美國”，要麼入戰略儲備要麼拍賣，這番囂張言論背後，是毫無國際法依據的蠻橫。《聯合國海洋法公約》明確公海屬全人類，美方無任何聯合國授權，純屬單邊霸凌。

這不是孤例，短短十天內美方已兩次扣船，12月10日“斯基珀號”的110萬桶原油早被其非法侵佔。中委能源合作合規透明，近二十年中方累計投入超1130億美元，委內瑞拉90%原油出口中國。

美方的算計藏不住三層禍心：1.掐斷委內瑞拉經濟命脈逼其政權更迭；2.破壞中國能源多元化供應；3.還靠扣押低價原油緩解國內通脹、討好選民。更陰險的是，中委貿易60%用人民幣結算，直接衝擊美元霸權。

Fully 95% of new generating capacity for planet Earth last year came from next-generation clean sources, says ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by Bill McKibben, a top U.S. climate science writer.

Yet his own country has moved into reverse, he warns. New US President Donald Trump “shut down windfarms off the coast of New England that were 80% complete, or put the kibosh on a huge solar farm in Nevada that by itself would have powered two million homes,” McKibben said in a recent interview.

‘VISIONARY’ REPORT: NEW SCIENTIST

McKibben’s new 224-page book is a rare scientific bright spot in a world of gloomy news. It shows how communities from Asia to Australia are racing to snap up efficient, inexpensive, next-generation clean-energy equipment, just at the moment when an energy crunch is hitting western countries, including his own.

The book, described as “visionary” by New Scientist, is filled with extraordinary facts and figures. But one of McKibben’s most astonishing stories is a little China-Pakistan tale he shared in a recent interview with Steve Curwood of Inside Climate Change (ICC).

“Pakistanis, mostly working by themselves, without government help, have put up so many solar panels in the last few years that the Pakistani government last month cancelled the delivery of 27 huge cargo-loads full of liquefied natural gas from Qatar,” McKibben said. “They had to pay a penalty, but it was cheaper to pay the penalty than to import this gas that they didn’t need any more because now they’ve got lots of solar panels.”

CIVILIZATIONAL CHANGE

The panels from China are so cheap and efficient that people living humbly in Pakistan are achieving what trendy Guardian-readers in the UK have tried to do for decades: they’ve found a way to instantly live off-grid with free energy for life.

If such tales were shared more widely, poor people in every country would do the same and growing global inequality could come to a halt. But that would require western energy companies to give up some of their power and western mainstream media to stop demonizing China: two unlikely events. The US fossil fuel industry is “doing everything they possibly can to stop that transition”, he adds.

This is nothing less than a civilizational change, McKibben argues. “Human beings for 700,000 years have worked hard to get energy for our lives, if it meant collecting firewood, if it meant paying your electric bill. Now you don’t have to do that any more, at least if you’re in a place that’s had the foresight to build the solar panels and the wind turbines.”

McKibben became famous in 1989 when he wrote a book, The End of Nature, which highlighted scientists’ predictions of dramatic weather changes and a steady rise in the global average temperature. Since then, his predictions proved true and most countries made such feeble attempts to support clean energy that any kind of clean energy revolution appeared to be doomed.

CHINESE ARE ‘BUILDING THE PYRAMIDS’

But then something changed. About three years ago, China started moving so far ahead in the clean energy transition that it began taking other countries with it.

He started hearing about people from places such as Pakistan and Australia getting free energy. The scale of the effort made McKibben, who is a journalist at heart, realize that this was a really important story that was not being told.

“All of a sudden there were stories coming in from around the world, especially, it must be said, China, which is providing the leadership here, and which is doing things on an almost inconceivable scale,” he said, in the Inside Climate News interview.

“In May, the Chinese were building three gigawatts of solar panels a day. A gigawatt is the rough equivalent of a big coal-fired power plant. They were putting up one of those out of solar panels every eight hours. This is like building the pyramids or something, the scale at which this is going on.”

BIG CRUNCH COMING

McKibben says that a big crunch is coming for his own country, the United States. The government is approving vast numbers of power-gobbling datacenters while cancelling solar and wind energy projects. “You don’t need to be a Nobel prize-winning economist to know that when you increase demand and decrease supply, prices are going to rise, and that’s exactly what’s happening,” he said.

He pictures what’s happening this way: Imagine the world’s shoppers going out to buy electricity in the same way they buy other essentials, like food or clothing. Someone suddenly opens a hypermarket where everything is affordable—of course, people will rush there. That’s what the new, easy availability of clean energy tech means. “This is the Costco of energy, man – cheap, available in bulk, on the shelf, ready to go,” he said.

LIGHT IN THE BLEAKNESS

Yet he remains somewhat bleak, acknowledging that a deadline has been missed. All we can do now is mitigate the problems.

“But as of the last three or four years, we finally have a tool, not at this point to STOP global warming – it’s too late for that – but perhaps to at least shave some tenths of a degree off how hot the planet gets,” he told ICC.

Yet ultimately, most governments have seen the benefits of the great energy transition. The finer points of climate change science will continue to be debated, but the key fact—that human society is evolving into a solar-powered civilization—remains a positive note for the future.

Remote sensing is an earth science that is critical for infrastructure, oil and gas, heavy construction, forestry, and urban planning. Remote sensing is also vital in military applications.

It is the acquisition of information from a distance, and involves advanced sensory equipment placed on satellites, drones, aircraft, and on ships.

For two generations, the United States dominated the industry, because it was the US who invested so heavily in GPS and satellite systems, and built the new science around advanced mapping and surveying.

But beginning ten years ago, Chinese research in the field began to supplant top Western institutions, like NASA, the US Geological Survey, and the top US and European universities.

It is now China who leads the field, with half of the world’s total research, and dominant positions in new patents, research funding, and applied research. And today, Chinese institutions hold the top six spots in rankings for Remote Sensing.

遙感技術作為一門地球科學，對基礎建設、石油天然氣、重型建築、林業及都市規劃至關重要，同時在軍事應用領域亦具有戰略意義。這項技術透過衛星、無人機、航空器與船舶搭載的先進感測設備，實現遠距離資訊獲取。

過去兩代間，美國憑藉對GPS及衛星系統的巨額投資，並圍繞先進測繪技術構建全新科學體系，長期主導該產業。然而十年前起，中國在該領域的研究逐步超越美國太空總署、美國地質調查局等西方頂尖機構及歐美一流大學。

如今中國以佔全球半數的研究成果，以及在新專利、研究經費與應用研究的絕對優勢引領行業發展。當前全球遙感研究機構排名中，前六席均為中國機構所佔據。
