一身白色軍服，很神氣的小伙子看來不足廿歲；但這位自稱來自陝西的「孩兒」卻說畢業後便即投身海軍，至今已有兩年了。他說學生時期曾到過香港，這次以另一身分到訪，心情很不一樣，期望有時間到岸上走走，舊地重遊看看香港有什麼改變。
香港改變多大也遠不及祖國。這陣子正在追看朋友推介的一輯有關五十年代抗美援朝，名為《跨過鴨綠江》的電視劇集。劇情當然有部分誇大，但背後的史實卻是明確的。新中國成立之初，不要說空軍，便是海軍也不存在。比起裝備優良先進的美國軍隊，中國有的只是人；但這才是最重要，只要萬眾一心又有什麼做不到？
回看今天，國際間有十一個國家擁有航空母艦。美國有十一艘，乃全球之冠。佔第二位的本來是英國、意大利和印度各有兩艘；但中國因為福建號投入服務加入了這圈子，最近更因為擁用第三艘航母而跳升至唯一的第二位。我們的第四代戰機在印巴一役中一鳴驚人，第五代戰機據聞已逼近美國同代戰機，第六代戰機更有望超越世界最頂尖技術，能不令人刮目相看？
當然，國家是否偉大並非以多少艘航母、多少先進戰機來衡量；但國家是否積弱卻可以你的軍備來測試。中國過去受盡欺凌侮辱便正是無力自衛所致，更因此被冠「東亞病夫」之惡名。中國人不好戰，但也不能怕戰；我不魚肉他人，但也休教他人魚肉我。今天，我們這些在西方文化下長大的一群，也因此首次可以昂首於海外人群中說：「我是中國人！」
