China’s households now consume as much energy as Western Europeans do, while electricity costs in China are far below the prices paid by consumers in North America and Europe.
These developments were unthinkable just two decades ago, as China struggled, and often failed, to meet surging demand.
China’s energy picture is daunting, and discouraging. China still relies heavily on imports of oil. And its giant population centers are in the East and South, while its domestic resources and production are concentrated in the West and North.
Beginning in 2006, China embraced Ultra-High Voltage (UHV) power transmission systems, and included them in their national planning. China’s diplomatic and economic efforts involved deep ties with oil-producing countries, and their commitment to renewable power raised the ceiling on domestic energy production. But UHV was equally crucial, and allows for Chinese citizens to now enjoy high-consumption lifestyles at far lower price points than in Western Europe, Australia
