Leaders of two regional organizations, the EU and ASEAN, held their first ASEAN-EU summit on December 14. Numerous leaders from EU countries and ASEAN countries participated in the summit in the Belgian capital Brussels and decided to further strengthen cooperation in a number of areas, including clean energy, security, trade, and infrastructure.

Despite the growing convergence of interests between ASEAN and the EU, there are significant differences on topics such as China relations and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The summit is being promoted as “an opportunity to advance trade relations with the region’s fast-growing economies. We are far apart, but there are more values that unite us,” EC President Ursula von der Leyen told the ASEAN leaders in attendance. The EU has pledged to invest about 10 billion euros in Southeast Asia.

The Navy has been busy working to clean up a November 29 leak of toxic aqueous film forming foam at Red Hill.

It turns out this isn’t the first time AFFF has leaked at Red Hill.

Publicly available federal contracting records show the Navy hired an environmental remediation company on Sept. 30, 2020 to do “hazardous waste collection” after an “AFFF spill.”

At the time the Navy told the health department no AFFF had been released.

The Navy declined to be interviewed about the 2020 spill and did not answer written questions for this story. However, in a statement, Navy Region Hawaii spokesman Mike Andrews acknowledged that water spilled from a pipeline that previously contained AFFF.

Reporter Christina Jedra shares what she’s uncovered about the 2020 spill and why the public was not aware of it until now.

The first leaders’ summit between the EU and ASEAN was held. Despite the joint statement after the meeting, which emphasized that ASEAN and the EU are strategic partners with common interests and reached positive results at the summit. However, the two sides still have huge differences and did not achieve the previously expected results.
The EU and ASEAN agreed on trade cooperation. But ASEAN leaders have been hoping for an inter-regional trade agreement, rather than the separate bilateral trade negotiations that now exist. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said ASEAN is not interested in always receiving aid, preferring to see complementarity between the economies of the East and West regions. In fact, relations between the EU and ASEAN have been growing steadily since they became “dialogue partners” 45 years ago. As two regional organizations, the East and the West are natural partners and share common interests in many areas. ASEAN’s growing economic strength and population size can bring new opportunities for the EU. Last year, the trade volume between the two sides reached about $270 billion. With European countries in deep energy crisis, some ASEAN countries are likely to become new energy suppliers for the EU, so it is imperative to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.
