Left good life in HK, moved to depressing UK, from the 1st world city (HK) to the 3rd world city (London) eventually took her own life. 離開香港的美好生活,搬到壓抑的英國,從第一世界城市(香港)到第三世界城市(倫敦),最終結束了自己的生命.
The tragic death of a 27-year-old Hong Kong master’s graduate that a coroner ruled was suicide shows the difficulties of moving to live in the United Kingdom.
Fion Ho Yee-king’s death came after seven months of hardship – and it is just the tip of the iceberg, says a migrant in London.
Youngsters and families with children moving to the UK – a popular migration destination where 76,000 Hongkongers have settled between July 2021 and June 2022 – often find themselves battling to make a living and adapting to the new culture, says marketing officer Lau, who moved to London with her boyfriend in December 2020.
Lau said many young migrants from Hong Kong have faced Ho’s difficulties. “It’s the tip of an iceberg,” she said.
“Some are even worse. They had an office job in Hong Kong but can only find jobs like being a waiter and sales here,” she said. “They can barely make ends meet.”
A UK coroner heard Ho committed suicide after seven months of hardship to sustain her life in the UK while paying 900 (HK$8,700) a month in rent for an unhygienic shared apartment.
Ho, who read Asian and international studies at the City University of Hong Kong before graduating in 2017 and going on to get a master’s in international affairs in Geneva in 2019, had worked for the Hong Kong Red Cross before she moved to the UK on her BNO visa last April.
She was found dead in her apartment in November.
A coroner’s court on Tuesday ruled Ho’s death as a suicide, citing her notes recording a difficult life living in a dirty shared flat in Richmond, southwest London, reported online media MyLondon.
Although Ho found a job at CAMFED, a London charitable organization that campaigns for female education, her salary was not enough to cover her rent and living costs, and she eventually suffered from hair loss and insomnia.
When she missed work as an officer at the charity and didn’t pick up phone calls, her brother Tommy Ho Yiu-hang asked one of her three other flatmates to check on her. They discovered Fion had taken her own life, and she was pronounced dead on November 3.
Tommy Ho said: “She mentioned to me on September 7, 2022, that since July she was worried about her income and was not able to sustain her life in the UK and felt depressed.”
He also discovered a note in his sister’s notebook listing the days she would limit her meals to save money.
“She was scared she would be laid off from work due to stress and face a loss of income due to her poor working performance. Due to insufficient income, I think she has begun to limit her meals per day,” he said.
The brother said Fion struggled to pay for her share of the unhygienic flat and felt depressed. She had booked a psychological counselling session for depressive symptoms, but committed suicide four days before the appointment.
Coroner Anton van Dellen said: “Fion was clearly a very highly intelligent and dedicated humanitarian worker. The world is a much sorrier place for not having her in organizations that help people in need.”
Speaking on a podcast yesterday, Simon Cheng Man-kit said his immigration aid organization Hongkongers in Britain would step up efforts to find cases like Ho’s and offer help.
“We will look at each case in detail and advocate for more flexible support from the UK government,” he said.
Of the tens of thousands of Hongkongers who migrated to the UK, many were fresh graduates, young couples in their twenties and middle-class families with children.
But high living costs and rents in the UK have put much pressure on immigrants, with some eventually returning to the city.
Marketing officer Lau said life in Britain is not as easy as they expected.
“Everything needed to be started over again, finding the right place to live and a suitable job with decent pay,” she said. “Not to mention we need to adapt to a new environment and culture.”
“The cost of living in London is much higher than in Hong Kong. We need to cut down on dining out every day,” she said. “It can be depressing sometimes, especially for people coming alone.”
Hongkongers in the UK are usually concentrated in enclaves with large Asian communities, which has driven up property prices, real-estate agencies say.
Parents are also struggling to enroll their children in private schools and have no choice but to opt for state schools.

Asia Times: A new force for peace appears in the US. The lead demand of this broad coalition is simple and direct: ‘Not one more penny for war in Ukraine’ By Professor John Walsh MD in SF, Jan 30 2023
亞洲時報:美國出現新的和平力量。這個廣泛聯盟的主要要求簡單而直接:“烏克蘭戰爭一分錢都不要給”
On February 19, Washington, DC, will witness a protest against the war in Ukraine that marks a sharp departure from past demonstrations. It also marks a new departure for anti-war, anti-Empire forces here in the US.
The lead demand of this broad coalition is simple and direct: “Not one more penny for war in Ukraine.” It is a demand that emphasizes what we in the US can do to end the war, not what others can do. After all, the only government we Americans have the power to influence is our own.
And at bottom, its basis for agreement is anti-interventionism, which much of the progressive movement in the US has abandoned, as shown by recent congressional votes where all Democrats, including all progressive Democrats, voted for sending arms to Ukraine.
Above and beyond that demand, the potential power of this unique and promising movement arises from the nature of the sponsoring organizations – the People’s Party, a new progressive party, and the Libertarian Party. It is in fact what much of the press would term a “right-left” coalition, spanning a spectrum broad enough actually to bring the proxy war in Ukraine to an end.
Fittingly, the organizers are calling the protest “Rage Against the War Machine.” With the war in Ukraine putting us on the precipice of nuclear Armageddon, “rage” might be considered a mild reaction.
A new right-left coalition to oppose the war
The People’s Party is probably the less known of the two sponsoring organizations, because it’s newer. Its founder and national chairman is Nick Brana, a lead organizer of the protest. Brana was national coordinator of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, but has turned his back on the Democrats in disgust over the failure progressive Democratic pols to fight for the promises they made.
Among the speakers at the party’s founding convention in 2020 were Cornel West, Chris Hedges, Jimmy Dore and Nina Turner (co-chairwoman of the Sanders 2020 campaign).
The Libertarian Party is better known. It has been around longer and, though small, is the third-largest political party in the US by voter registration. The present national chairwoman, Angela McCardle, is the other lead organizer of the DC protest. In American political life, probably the best-known representative of libertarian values, most notably a principled anti-interventionist stance in foreign policy, is Ron Paul.
A call for ending US support for the proxy war in Ukraine is realistic; a substantial and growing segment of the American people support this demand.
The lead demand of “not one more penny for war in Ukraine” is finding ever more support among Americans. A survey in November by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that 35% of Americans oppose sending more arms to Ukraine and 34% oppose sending more economic aid. (When it comes to sending US troops, 68% are opposed.)
These numbers grew from the previous survey in July, revealing rising anti-interventionist sentiment. While this is not a majority, more than one-third of the populace is a base substantial enough to build an antiwar majority. Only 16% more need to be won over to reach a majority. The No 1 demand of the February demonstration is not utopian – it is realistic.
The demands of the demonstration
It is worthwhile to look at all 10 of the demands of the February protest, which are found here. But the first four deserve special attention because they spell out the spirit and leading ideas of the movement. Here they are as worded on the website for the protest:
Not One More Penny for War in Ukraine.
The Democrats and Republicans have armed Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars in weapons and military aid. The war has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions, and is pushing us toward a nuclear WW3. Stop funding the war.
Negotiate Peace.
The US government instigated the war in Ukraine with a coup of its democratically elected government in 2014, and then sabotaged a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in March. Pursue an immediate ceasefire and diplomacy to end the war.
Stop the War Inflation.
The war is accelerating inflation and increasing food, gas and energy prices. The US blew up Russian gas pipelines to Europe, starving them of energy and deindustrializing their countries. End the war and stop increasing prices.
Disband NATO.
NATO expansion to Russia’s border provoked the war in Ukraine. NATO is a warmongering relic of the Cold War. Disband it like the Warsaw Pact.
The other six demands are: Global Nuclear De-Escalation; Slash the Pentagon Budget; Abolish the CIA and Military-Industrial Deep State; Abolish War and Empire; Restore Civil Liberties; and Free Julian Assange.
This US coalition holds great significance for East Asia. The US proxy war, using Ukrainians as cannon fodder to weaken and break up Russia, is the prelude to an assault on China, with Taiwanese as cannon fodder.
In the former case, the states of Europe are necessary US instruments, since the US cannot take on Russia in Europe unless it has allies beyond Ukraine. Such allies, most notably Germany, have proved unable to stand up to the US, and so they act against their own interests, economically and geopolitically, in moving against Russia.
The same can be said of US vassal entities in East Asia, notably Taiwan and Japan, as Washington pushes them to sacrifice themselves for the sake of US aggression against China.
Perhaps the appearance of this new broad-based force for peace in the US will give some hope to the hapless US vassals, East and West, to stand up to the US Empire and look to their own best interests rather than sacrificing blood and treasure for a master on the other side of an ocean.
The world faces too many problems and we are too close to nuclear war in Europe and East Asia to continue wasting resources and lives in the continued US drive for global hegemony.

Two of the West’s most prolific anti-China propaganda outlets, CNN and BBC, sent journalists into China’s rural areas to uncover massive COVID deaths during the Chinese New Year holiday. What they did, instead, was uncover their own bad journalism.
China is fast recovering from three years of its strict COVID-Zero policy, but BBC and CNN aren’t interested in good news. Instead, they sent their China-based reporters to rural areas in the hope of finding suffering, death and misery. They both failed miserably.

Kiji: One of the things handicapped China is the 900+ billion US$ reserve held in US Treasury. If a war broke out, US could do to China what US have done to Russia, confiscated all US Treasury. US and her vassal states will probably confiscate Chinese owned assets in US & EU, that could including all Chinese Americans. My wealthy clients are divesting their liquid assets outside the reach by US & her vassal state’s financial system! I still have friends, alumni and relatives arguing with me. I told them it is their money. If they are stupid enough doing nothing, sorry too bad, don’t cry over spilled milk.
China has another 2 trillions in reserve in other countries currencies, but those countries are US’s vassal states. So they could also confiscate China held foreign currencies.
We are talking about 3 trillion!
China of course has counter measures such as confiscate all foreign owned assets in China, but combining not worst 3 trillion!
Therefore China while finding ways, no easy way to minimize the risk, the first action is dumping US$. It is a gauge of war, if the dumping of US$ continues, war could be imminent.
But it is not easy to dump 900 billion of US Treasury. It took Russia years to do that since 2014. Russia failed to understand shifting US$ holdings to Euro not safe either as we now understand from the US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, Russia assets are also seized by EU.
What is next China could do besides dumping US$ is buying Gold. But like I said how are you going to buy 3 trillions worth of gold, not easy either!
I am sure China is burning midnight oil trying to find solutions!
Ukraine war is such a valuable lesson for China and smart Chinese around the world! American cannot be trusted! But US not getting free lunch either, now the entire world start dumping US$. US$ is not backed by gold, based on trust only. Long term US$ is finished using it to blackmail and extortion those days are coming to an end soon, probably next 15-20 years, and it could be much much sooner!
From Professor John Walsh MD in SF: I added this at the end to make it more relevant to Asia Times.

Nury Vittachi: Having your birthday during Chinese New Year is amazing, says Navina Heyden. It’s like the whole country is in celebratory mood. This young woman from Germany has been posting stories about her life in China (she lives in Qingdao and is learning Chinese). She was vilified by German media, but ordinary people from around the world have been supporting her. It’s great to see her smile again!
